TLT ACTOM completes main ventilation fan contract for Black Rock Mine’s new Gloria Shaft
Following the successful upgrade of the main ventilation fan system at Black Rock Mine Operations’ Nchwaning Shaft in 2014, TLT ACTOM was awarded the main vent fan contract for the mine’s new Gloria Ventilation Shaft in mid-2015.
Manganese producer Black Rock Mine Operations, situated near Kathu in the Northern Cape, is operated by Assmang Limited, which is jointly owned by Assore Limited and African Rainbow Minerals Limited.
TLT-Turbo – Joint Venture
ACTOM has joined international fans company TLT-Turbo GmbH of Germany in forming a joint venture (JV) company to cater to both the Sub-Saharan and local market for all types of large fans.
The market comprises mainly the industrial, mining, process, metallurgical, cement and power generation industries. The formation of the JV company, TLT ACTOM (Pty) Ltd, and the technology and licence agreements signed by the two partners took effect from May 1, 2015.
Mine vent retrofit project at manganese mine
Leading mining ventilation fans manufacturer and contractor ACTOM Mechanical Equipment successfully performed a major mine ventilation fan retrofit project recently, replacing an existing fan assembly with an extended version within a three-day shutdown period at Assmang’s Black Rock underground manganese mine near Kathu in the Northern Cape.
Black Rock is operated by Assmang Ltd, which is jointly owned by Assore Ltd and African Rainbow Minerals Ltd.
Leading mine ventilation fan manufacturers and suppliers ACTOM Mechanical Equipment has been awarded two main mine vent fan contracts worth a total of R56-million for two new collieries that are currently being developed as part of Sasol Mining’s mine replacement programme to extend the life of its coal operations in Secunda.
The two new mines are Shondoni and Impumelelo, which are being established to replace Middelbult and Brandspruit collieries respectively.
Palabora Mining Company vent contract
ACTOM Mechanical Equipment has produced its largest-ever centrifugal fan to date for a mine vent system to serve the expansion of local copper producer Palabora Mining Company’s underground mining operations at Phalaborwa, Limpopo Province.
Sasol Mining’s Thubelisha shaft
ACTOM Mechanical Equipment, a leading manufacturer and supplier of mine ventilation fans, has achieved a breakthrough in securing a contract to provide main surface ventilation fans for the new Thubelisha shaft at Sasol Mining’s Twistdraai Colliery at Secunda, Mpumalanga.
The multi-million rand fast-track turnkey contract, awarded in August 2010, is the first ventilation fans contract awarded to ACTOM Mechanical Equipment by Sasol Mining.
Diesel-powered emergency ventilation fans
Many mining companies are introducing emergency diesel-powered ventilation for their underground operations to enable the safe evacuation of mineworkers in the event of unscheduled power cuts.
The new trend has been brought about by the increased risk of power cuts arising from South Africa’s currently overstretched power generation capacity.
New port tugs
New port tugs again to be powered by MAN engines supplied by ACTOM
ACTOM Mechanical Equipment (formerly Alstom Mechanical Equipment) has once again been awarded a contract for manufacture and supply of high performance main propulsion diesel engines for new tugs required by the National Port Authority (NPA).
