R40-million gas-cleaning contract awarded to ACTOM
A leading local ferromanganese producer recently awarded a R40-million fast-track contract to ACTOM Air Pollution Control for the provision and installation of gas-cleaning equipment for secondary fume extraction at its Gauteng plant.
The plant’s capacity is being increased with the installation of a new large capacity furnace to replace the two furnaces installed when the plant was established in the mid-1990’s.
The new equipment will incorporate some of the existing gas-cleaning equipment at the plant. The capacity of the existing six-compartment jet pulse bag filter – which ACTOM Air Pollution Control (then MikroPul) originally supplied – is to be almost doubled with the addition of two more compartments, while a total of 12 secondary fume extraction points will be established.
“These will comprise two fume extraction points for the furnace’s smoke hood, four points for extraction of fumes generated during tapping operations of the furnace and six points for fume extraction from the plant’s casting operations,” explained Gerard Pretorius, ACTOM Air Pollution Control’s Sales Manager.
“The contract also involves supplying and installing an extensive ducting system linking the various extraction points to the bag filter, with some of the original ducting also being used. In addition, the existing stack will be replaced with a larger and taller stack.”
